Somebody’s Daughter Initial Development

Last week I had the privilege of working with dancers from all aver the world and using our creative skills to address one of the major issues that is facing modern society.

Human Trafficking is a massive issue all over the world! I have heard about the topic , but only started to realise the scale of the issue when working on this project. There are more slaves  in the world now ,than there has been at any other point in history. This shocked me when you consider the scale of the slave trade while it was still legal. It is estimated that worldwide more than 800,000 men, women and children are trafficked over borders (or moved within their own country) every year and 87% of trafficked victims are sexually exploited.

I am delighted to be working with Infusion Physical Theatre on this project. Daniel Cossette (Director and Co-Founder of Infusion) originally had the vision for the project and then has brought the rest of the dancers onboard.

Together we have designed a show to raise awareness of this topic ,that is affecting so many people. We tell a story that displays some of the systematic traps that traffickers employ ,to separate and isolate a girl from her community ,and where that can end up.

One of the major things I have learnt about human trafficking it how easy it is to not think about what goes on behind the scenes. We might think about sexual exploitation, which is the biggest, but people are known to be trafficked for car washes and nail bars too.Now you may receive a great service when you are there but what happens when you have gone home or when you have turned the computer screen off.
